About Lovers Key State Park

Lovers Key State Park preserves one of Southwest Florida's last undeveloped barrier islands, accessible via a scenic 2.25-mile tram ride through mangrove tunnels. The park spans approximately 1,500 acres of beach, maritime hammock, and mangrove ecosystems, offering a tranquil escape from nearby developed areas. Visitors enjoy uncrowded, shell-laden beaches ideal for shelling, sunbathing, and swimming, along with extensive opportunities for kayaking through winding waterways and exploring natural Florida landscape. Named after a couple who reportedly eloped to the island, Lovers Key captures the romance and beauty of old Florida while providing modern amenities and educational experiences about coastal ecosystems.

Wildlife

Lovers Key supports diverse coastal wildlife including dolphins, manatees, and numerous seabird species such as herons, egrets, and roseate spoonbills. The mangrove forests provide critical nursery habitat for fish and crustaceans, while the beaches and dunes support nesting sea turtles and shorebirds. Visitors may observe fiddler crabs, mullet, and other marine life in shallow waters, and the islands serve as an important stopover for migratory birds along the Gulf Coast.

Visitor Tips

• The tram ride is mandatory for beach access; arrive early to secure parking and board promptly during peak seasons. • Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent—mosquitoes can be active, especially in summer and humid conditions. • Visit during cooler months (November through April) for the most comfortable experience and better shelling conditions. • Wear water shoes or sandals suitable for shells and bring a bag if you plan to collect shells. • Plan for at least a half-day visit to enjoy both beach time and a kayaking or nature walk experience.
