Spring
Henderson Beach is one of the few remaining natural beach parcels in Destin — surrounded on both sides by dense commercial and residential development.
The park's sugar-white sand is composed almost entirely of quartz crystals — the same material found at Gulf Islands National Seashore, just a short drive west.
Gopher tortoises, a keystone species, dig burrows throughout the park's scrub habitat that shelter over 350 other wildlife species.
Sea Turtle Nesting Season
Loggerhead sea turtles nest on Henderson Beach — nests are marked and monitored. Beach lighting ordinances apply.
Destin Fishing Rodeo
The park's beach provides a great vantage point during Destin's famous month-long fishing tournament.
Protects a rare coastal scrub and slash pine flatwood ecosystem sandwiched between Destin's development. Home to gopher tortoises, scrub lizards, fox squirrels, loggerhead sea turtles (nesting), and migratory shorebirds. The Gulf-front dunes are among the highest and most pristine in the Florida Panhandle.
This is the best place in Destin to enjoy a natural beach without commercial clutter. The 1-mile coastal nature trail through scrub and pine flatwoods is one of the most underappreciated walks on the Emerald Coast. Visit on weekday mornings for a quieter experience. Sunrise is spectacular here.
No lifeguards on duty. Rip currents can be hazardous — check surf conditions before swimming. Beach wheelchair available at the ranger station. The park is a narrow strip between the highway and the Gulf — stay within the park boundary.
